Play It Again! Grant Writing Tips for Every Library!
by Janet Nelson
These days nearly every library could use some extra funds to better serve their community. Some libraries have gone as far as to employ professional grant writers to help in securing funds for specific projects and have found it to be quite worthwhile. Understandably, this approach isn’t for everyone. The good news is that there are grant writing tips that make the process of writing library grants easier and more effective.
While the grant writing process may seem a little overwhelming, there are more and more opportunities available to secure funds in specific areas, such as technology, literacy, STEM/STEAM, workforce development and the list goes on and on.
The other good news is that libraries are great at sharing and a quick Internet search can bring up a wide variety of tips and some great examples of how to break the process down and make it easier to ensure a successful outcome. I came across this outstanding webpage put together by the Pima County Public Library that provided an easy-to-understand perspective for thinking through those important points to present, as well as, numerous other valuable resources.
Some of the additional resources you will find are sources of funding and Demco also provides an online database of available grant funding for you to take a look at.
Demco sponsored a webinar a while back that was presented by Catherine Hakala-Ausperk of Libraries Thrive Consulting that dove into the topic of grant writing. Catherine presents a common sense way of approaching the topic that enlists the services of a “grant writing team” that can be found within your existing library staff. She has a way of helping all library staff see that they can be part of the solution for their library and her approach allows everyone to contribute based on their strengths making the prospect of bringing in additional money via grants seems much more realistic. The other thing that she points out is that even if you don’t obtain your grant the first time you try, you are still building an important base that will make it easier to pursue other opportunities as they come along.
It is easy to watch this outstanding on-demand webinar to find tips and tricks to developing your winning grant proposal. In addition to the broadcast, you’ll also find additional materials including, the presentation slides, a log of the questions and answers that were addressed during and after the session and additional resources that provide further insight into the ins and outs of grant writing. Take advantage of this and numerous other webinars all ready and available when you are.
