What was your first library job?
I had NO IDEA what I was getting myself into … I thought that I wanted to be a journalist. I thought I might just be an English teacher while I searched for the perfect job. I thought I’d just take this librarian gig to earn a paycheck while I awaited my forever career. What did I know? LOL
Why are you proud to be a librarian?
I am often times the first experience that my students have with libraries and literature. I will never forget the first moment when the enormity of that fact hit me. My students see the joys, the freedom that reading brings … through me!
How do you stay inspired?
Staying inspired is not a difficult thing when you are surrounded by amazing teachers doing amazing things each and every day. I am so very blessed to be a part of a warm, vibrant and creative community. I find inspiration in everything.
What do you do for fun? What’s one thing people wouldn’t guess about you?
I am a hack sports photographer (gymnastics). I love being in the gym with those amazing athletes, catching a moment in time. Something people wouldn’t guess about me? I’m a black belt … like for real 🙂
Describe your best day at the library. What made it memorable?
That’s like asking me to pick which of my kids I love the most! Even the rough days are wonderful.
What are your favorite Demco products? (Oldies but goodies and newbies welcome.)
A staple in my program are the plastic promotional drawstring bags. Each student gets one. On it, I write his/her name, class and LIBRARY DAY. It helps cut down on lost and damaged books AND it helps remind the students and their parents on which day their library books are due!
If the sky were the limit, what would you do at your library?
RENOVATE! Our library is cozy and I LOVE that. I wouldn’t want it to be a huge space … my kiddos are 3–8 years old. Small is good. BUT … I would love to have a proper computer lab to work in, an office where I could set up a nice “book hospital” and stadium seating for storytime!
How do you envision your library in 2025?
Much the same as it is now! Hopefully we’ll have some really great high tech gadgets to make storytime more fun and interactive. Maybe some CGI holographic characters to tell the story with me? Readers theater would be sooooo cool with toys like that!
What’s the best piece of advice you have for your fellow librarians?
Remember why we do what we do. Remember that books were meant to be loved. Remember that it takes more muscles to frown than to smile 🙂
