Patrons Your Library Serves:
What was your first library job?
I started as a volunteer in my local library and began as a substitute for our school librarian. When there was an opening I jumped at it!! Best choice I ever made. Lots of adventure on this journey but worth every minute. I was able to take my daughter with me as I worked in her school and love watching all the kids grow.
Why are you proud to be a librarian?
I feel like it is the perfect job really. I get to see all the kids and stay with them through their elementary time. I give them the security as they move up of seeing me year after year. I truly love sharing my love and enjoyment of books. Library is a fun place, a peaceful place and a safe place in a chaotic world.
How do you stay inspired?
My kids and families here at school. They are so caring and always give me inspiration to try new things and explore with them. I never want to get predictable!
What do you do for fun? What’s one thing people wouldn’t guess about you?
I read, read, read and love my book club ladies! Gardening is wonderful. I love to craft things and re-purpose items. I guess the thing they wouldn’t guess about me is that I love to do community service and build /repair houses with the groups I work with. I also love rock music!
Describe your best day at the library. What made it memorable?
This happens often but the first time was memorable. I had a young man in 4th grade, an athlete who we could not get to read anything but comic books. We all tried to interest him in something new. At the end of the year I celebrated poetry with my classes and guess what he loved! He stood in front of my desk just reading poem after poem. It was amazing! I love showing kids that there are many other wonderful things to read.
What are your favorite Demco products? (Oldies but goodies and newbies welcome.)
If the sky were the limit, what would you do at your library?
Expand my collection for sure but I love having wonderful spaces for the kids to curl up and fall in love with books. I have always wanted a tree house in my library space. That would be the best! A dream of mine.
How do you envision your library in 2025?
A wonderful blend of books and technology. I think we should never lose actual books. Something special happens when you put a real book into a child’s hands. You need to appeal to everyone though.
What’s the best piece of advice you have for your fellow librarians?
Be ready to play and change direction at any time. The library should be a fun place, a place where kids can ask questions and explore their world. Connect with your community! Libraries need the support of everyone in the community.
