Patrons Your Library Serves:
Share a transformation at your library that you are most proud of.
Students feel comfortable using the ITT Tech Virtual Library: to look, to evaluate and to use eResources. Our students demonstrate information literacy skills. Many of the students participate in outreach programs. Students get help with eReaders/laptops. Every student has an ePortfolio.
Describe your library’s most innovative or most successful service or program.
There are many different programs, but the Celebration of the Constitution Day and election-ready activities stand out the most. Every September, I rent a period costume, and we have a George Washington character on campus who meets and greets students and provides our college community with our own personal “Bill of Rights.” Now, it is more than a program, it’s a tradition, because we’ve been doing it for 10 years!
How does your library connect with your community?
At the end of the summer, we run the Back to School Drive, and bring the backpacks with school supplies to local schools in the local neighborhood. In fall, we participate in cancer prevention activities and create “The Pink Wall” with testimonials. In April, we provide the opportunity to participate in National Poetry Month and always find new talent who know how to express themselves in creative writing.
What is your library’s vision for the future?
We embraced the digital world and advocate eBooks and digital databases for research. We embedded ourselves in the classrooms: because of teaching the eResources and eServices. Students know that they can come to the LRC/library, and they will be helped. Perhaps, in the future, we will have more girls/young ladies in science and technology programs, and we will accept more minority students and low-income students in STEM. The rise of digital services will provide online tutoring services with on-demand access at any time, 24/7.
How do you stay inspired?
The inspiration comes from hard-working students who have perfect attendance and the highest GPAs by overcoming various life-problems and continuing with their education. Inspiration comes from the statistical data indicating that over 90% of our campus is using the eResources from ITT Tech VL Library (within our district and nationally). And of course, the new technology … every term we extend the use of technology, which is more specialized and better addresses the needs of the students for studying and learning.
What’s the best piece of advice you have for your fellow librarians?
In the 21st century we are living in, the digital world and digital instrumental tools mean librarians must provide new ways for students to express themselves and gain new essential skills.
