Global literacy heroes are working tirelessly to ensure books reach impoverished and remote areas around the globe. Award-winning librarian and SLJ Mover and Shaker Krista Welz shares ideas for introducing kids to these literacy heroes and inspiring learning opportunities through their stories.
About Krista Welz
Krista is a Library Media Specialist at North Bergen High School, NJ. She is a lifelong resident of her town and also worked for the town’s public library for seven years as the Children’s Librarian. She is a Google for Education Certified Trainer and co-founder of Edcamp Urban. In 2017, Krista was named North Bergen High School's Educational Services Professional of the Year and a Library Journal 2017 Mover & Shaker Educator. In March 2017, she was awarded as a Tech Troubadour Social Media Superstar from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). Krista is currently a doctoral student in the Educational Technology Leadership Program at New Jersey City University. She specializes in technology integration in schools and libraries, and she is a graphic, web and game designer. Krista is currently working on a library consortium mobile app and plans to design a library-based time-management mobile game. Krista is a New Jersey Makers Day Board Member and serves on the Mackin TYSL Advocacy Board. She has won several grants, including YALSA book giveaways and James Patterson/Scholastic Reading Club’s Save School Libraries Grant, for her high school’s Media Center.
